A good dog never dies
she always stays
she walks beside you
on crisp autumn days
when frost is on the fields
and winter's drawing near
her head is within our hand
in her old way.

. . . FLO, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2006. Lori Taylor writes:

We had to let Flo go

As some of you know, Flo became seriously ill last evening and we took her to the emergency vet around 10 p.m. last night. They kept her with the probable diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis. This morning, the emergency vet called and said another x-ray indicated more serious problems and recommended we take her to get an ultrasound immediately.

Flo had a large cancerous tumor fully encapsulating her spleen and the cancer had spread to her liver. The tumor on her spleen had burst and she was bleeding internally. She went to The Rainbow Bridge in our arms. Our hearts are breaking.

She would have been ten years old on June 3, 2006.

Thank you everyone for your love.

Flo is also mourned by Ron Swisher and by her Airedale companion, Forge.

May all the dogs I have ever loved carry my coffin, howl at the moonless sky and lie down with me sleeping when I die.

. . . RUPERT, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge on November 26, 2006. Dave MacDonald writes:

In December of 1998, Deb & I started talking about getting an Airedale Terrier. We spoke to Shelley DeMerchant, who told us of Rupert. In March of 1999, Rupert was 3.5 years old and had been returned from his first family; it was decided that Deb would go down for an interview and to see Rupert.

Deb was not sure she would like an older dog, especially a male. After her first night at Shelley's, Deb had fallen in love with Rupert, and he was rapidly bonding to her. Deb flew back to Ottawa after three days with Rupert. I met Rupert about six hours after Deb got home with him. He was a little discomforted from his flight and was somewhat nervous about his new home. Within the hour he had claimed me as his own and stolen my heart as well.

Deb has fibromyalgia & chronic pain. Rupert quickly fit into our household and sensed that Deb had special needs. While strong enough to pull me off my feet, he was always quiet with Deb. Often, Deb was too sore to walk or hold hands, even on those days she could walk Rupert. To see Rupert when he was working with Deb is to witness a very special bond; some have remarked that he puts his entire being into the task of guiding Deb safely to her destination.

When we added Star to our home as a 12-week-old ADT puppy, Rupert rapidly adopted her and instructed her in the ways & behaviours of the Airedale.

He was our companion, Deb's helpmate, Star's teacher & packmate, and a gentle reminder of life's better offerings.
