WORKING IN THE
KONINKLIJK THEATER CARRE

Ph

The history of Royal Theatre Carré is closely associated with the family Carré. This French/German dynasty of highly-skilled riders and circus artists gave its first shows in France and Germany in the late 18th century. In 1874 Carré got permission to build a circus building, with a 14 meters cross-cut arena, a heated vestibule and lovely anterooms. In the autumn of 1886, Oscar Carré got permission to build a complete concrete building and in April 1887 they started with the ramming of 1450 wooden piles. On the 3rd of December they opened the circus building with a Gala.

Theatre Carré is located in an old building along the Amstel river. Oscar Carré received permission to build the theatre in 1886. The name Carré originates from the German circus family Carré. Theatre Carré has been a leading theatre in Amsterdam for over a century.

Oscar Carré was already famous for his horse acts at a young age. He had, for instance, 14 Trakhener stallions that would rear up simultaneously on his command. In 1909, Oscar Carré celebrated his 40th anniversary as a ringmaster. After this anniversary, Oscar Carré started struggling with his health. He died at the age of 65 in Copenhagen in 1911 during a tour through Europe.

Theatre Carré celebrated its centenary in 1987, on the occasion of which Carré received the exceptional designation 'Royal'. Ever since, the theatre is called the Royal Theatre Carré. The theatre has seen many structural alterations & renovations during its existence, due to which it has developed from a small theatre facility into a major theatre with circus facilities.

During these alterations, however, the preservation of the theatre's unique, historic atmosphere has always been a priority.
