Odie

Beloved friend, companion and therapist of Sally.

Odie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 12 June 1993.

I explained it to St. Peter,
I'd rather stay here,
Outside the pearly gate.
I won't be a nuisance,
I won't even bark.
I'll be very patient and wait.
I'll be here chewing on a celestial bone,
No matter how long you may be.
I'd miss you so much, if I went in alone,
It wouldn't be Heaven for me.

DeMerchant Airedale Puppy Reunion
31 July-1 August 1999

On 4 August 1999, Sally writes: An Adventure in Canada, Eh?

I'm just back (last night) from the Seventh Annual Airedale Puppy Reunion Party at Shelley DeMerchant's in Scotland, Ontario. There are several astounding and exciting things to report. The big news first.

I bought a puppy. Her name is Appyaire's Errant Aireabella. We'll probably call her Bella (Beeeeeeelllllllllaaa). This is my first female. It was love at first sight - at least on my part. She's an independent cuss and full of that extraordinary Airedale p*ss and vinegar. Oh, I love it!

She was born May 1 and weighs a whole 25 pounds. Those puppy teeth are as sharp as razors, and I thought I would be coming home noseless - but what a beauty she is! Of course, I'm just a tad bit prejudiced.

Ph

However, yesterday, a friend of Shelley's, another professional breeder and handler took a look at her. I just beamed as he went over her body structure, her sharpness, her coloring (deep black and reddish), her coat and her almond eyes and pronounced her 'a beauty'. Of course, at that point, it really didn't matter if she had crooked ears or a stubby tail - I fell head-over-heels immediately anyway.

Now, how to get her the nearly 1000 miles to St. Louis. I won't fly a dog - that's just me - particularly in this awful St. Louis heat. But we came up with a plan. Shelley will drive Aireabella to Detroit on Friday, August 20, where I will meet her. She'll leave her Explorer there and come with me back to northern Indiana to spend the night at my mother's.

That's Shelley on the right

Then on Saturday, Shelley, Aireabella & I will journey to St. Louis where Shelley & I will get into as much trouble as humanly possible until Tuesday when she'll fly back to Detroit, pick up her vehicle and head on home. I am just beside myself with joy.

Bella, wide awake and Shelley, fast asleep.
Typically, the ADT Puppy has more energy than the Hooman!

Rodney Arthur McArthur Babcock
June 1, 1985-April 20, 2000

On 20 April 2000, Sally writes: Rodney was diagnosed with cancer last September and at the time given two week to live. Yeah, right. Nobody understands this Terrier tenacity. We struggled through the months with a whole lot of medicines and TLC - very careful to keep his weigh up and walk him separately, etc. It was a terrible strain for a very long time. But, as I kept telling Caroline, the vet and others, I'm not God. However, he stopped eating 2-1/2 days ago and became a zombie. He was barely functioning and had lost so much weight that his tumors were sticking out at his sides and abdomen. Caroline and I talked late last night, and I felt he was now suffering. Thus, I made my decision. This morning, when I went into the kitchen to check on him, a tiny voice came into my head saying, 'Help me. Help me'. So, I knew I'd made the right decision.

The saddest thing I've ever experienced was when we got down to Caroline's. I aked her to put him under (sedative or anesthetic) so once he was under, I could leave. See, I don't want my dog feeling my pain as he dies. Right before he plopped down under the anesthetic, he reached up and gave me a kiss - out of the blue. He hadn't done that in months and months. It was totally devastating to me.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.
