On November 20, 2004, Dave writes: Barnaby the rescue 'dale crossed over The Rainbow Bridge today.

Barnaby was diagnosed with cancer and in the last several days it became increasingly clear that distress & discomfort had taken the joy from his life.

Barnaby was born in 1994. He lived with another family, on a chain or rope in the yard, for perhaps a year & a half. He had been teased by some neighbor children to the point where he bit one of them who got too close. An agreement between the two parties called for Barnaby to be destroyed.

Rather than follow through with that agreement, Barnaby's owner turned him over to a local animal shelter in 1996 (without telling the people at the shelter the whole story). Barnaby came to the farm shortly thereafter. When we adopted him it was made known to us that he had bitten a child and the circumstances under which the event had taken place.

It was only after Barnaby had been on the farm for several months that the rest of the story came to light. Apparently the aggrieved party had inquired as to what had happened to the dog. When told the dog had been sent to the animal shelter and from there on to a new home they attempted to find where Barnaby was living. The director of the shelter refused to provide these people any information beyond that Barnaby was in a home where he would not encounter any children. Nothing more ever came of the inquiry and Barnaby lived out his days here on the farm, never having harmed anyone else.

His favorite pastime, besides eating dinner, was going for a walk. He enjoyed wandering around the nearby state park, occasionally taking a moment to flop into the shallows of the river to cool off. If there wasn't time to go to the park, a jaunt along the corn & soybean fields across the road was a very acceptable alternative.

Barnaby loved to play and got along well with other dogs. His ability to stand at the fence & bark is legendary. No vehicle or person came near the farm without his notice.

Now a playmate is gone, animated barking has given way to silence, and a loyal companion who shared walks of uncounted miles, travels a new path.

Farewell Barnaby . . .

From AMYMARIE FORNELLI:

The heartbreak of rescue starts as we take them into our home, continues as we piece together the tragic past, and in the end leaving us with the ache of losing them. Small comfort, at times, to remember they ended life knowing they were loved. I am so very sorry to hear of Barnaby's passing. The world is so much a better place because of people such as you who care enough to take a Barnaby into your lives.

From JACKIE McGUINNESS, ANNIE & MacIAIN:

I was sad to hear the news about Barnaby, but happy to hear that you had been able to rescue him and give him a loving home for the last eight years and that the people in the shelter cared enough not to give out any information on him.
