On 25 January 2006, comes the sad news:

We lost Babsie on 14 January; it was sudden & very unexpected . . . well to gone in less than 24 hours . . . she had a massive Urethral tumor - Transitional Cell Carcinoma. She had a biopsy, then hemorrhaged, cardiac & respiratory arrest and a massive stroke several hours after the biopsy . . . I am just now facing the reality of her not being here.

A month later, on Thursday, 16 February, MaryLynn writes:

Another sudden and unexpected loss. Ike passed to the Rainbow Bridge at about 7:00 p.m. this evening.

He hadn't been having any problems, but had developed a big lump in his "armpit" over the past two weeks - last night he wouldn't eat and was having some difficulty with his breathing- restless and unable to settle comfortably. He went in to see his vet this morning and they kept him all day for tests and care.

His bloodwork showed that he was very anemic, but still making red blood cells- meaning he was bleeding internally.- His X-rays showed a massive tumor invading his chest cavity, cutting lung capacity to about one-quarter of what is normal. The tumor was visibly pressing on his heart- too much fluid in his chest to see if the tumor had involved the heart.

Dr. Roberts could not give us any kind of positive prognosis- even if chest was tapped to find out what the fluid was, there was no surgical solution for the tumor so close to the heart - he had concerns that Ike would be able to make it through the night.

So Ikey and I talked for quite a while and cuddled and loved - though he was struggling to breathe, his tail wagged every time he heard my voice and he licked the tears off my face.

I asked him if he would go see Babsie and Mom and give them our love, and told him he was my very best boy and that I loved him so so much and kissed him for all of us . . . and he began his new journey.

Watch over us Ikey - we love you so much and our lives will never be the same, just like our lives changed forever when you joined our home and hearts. Blessed be, my best boy - I'll always love you - my Iker, Ikey, Ikeydoo.
