BONNY GOES TO THE DENTIST

7 JUNE 2017

So Bonny has HORRIBLE breath; a stench once smelled, never forgotten.
She loves to give kisses, so I KNOW this. And she smacks her lips. A lot.

One evening as she sat on my lap,
she finally trusted me enough to let me look at her teeth.
Not bad, actually, so why does her breath stink so badly?

THEN I notice lumps of stuff on her lips . . . clumps of old food.
Lesions on her lips. YUCK! She had been eating canned food,
before I put her on kibble when she came here,
so who knows how long those lumps of food
had been festering on her lips?

I soaked cotton balls in Listerine and removed much of the crud and cleaned her lips.
However, that was the only time she let me do that;
she's a quick learner!

Luckily, 7 June was her dental appointment;
special note was taken of cleaning her lips, her jowls and
shaving away the hair around the same . . .

Dr. Hathaway swabbed the lesions; there were bacteria,
but no yeast. Antibiotic was applied to help with healing
and a different oral antibiotic was begun for both this issue
and one of a potential UTI.

This tooth was being pushed out (note how high it is,
compared to the others), so it was extracted

As with the other Cairns I have here, there is resorption of roots.
Dr. Hathaway commented that she'd never seen so many dogs
of one breed all have resorption. Something to be studied, perhaps.

Antibiotic treatment was given to several teeth in hopes of saving them;
Bonny will be considered for another dental in six months.

Dr. Hathaway writes:

As discussed, her ALT has improved in response to milk thistle, which is great!
Continue with that for maintenance unless otherwise directed.
Her ALP has increased slightly, which I suspect is due to her Clindamycin use,
so I am not too concerned at this time.

Lastly, her globulins (inflammatory blood protein) is increased,
which is likely due to the inflammation around her lips;
however, we recommend rechecking these after we treat her mouth
to ensure they are improving as expected.

Good news is that her kidneys look stellar!

Bonny drank some water, but did not eat anything until Thursday night,
when she was finally able to take her new antibiotic.
She is alert as always, and walks outside with Zoe & SweeTea,
but with the Tramadol, she sleeps otherwise.

AND HER BIG SLOPPY KISSES NO LONGER STINK!
