AND THEN THERE WERE TWO . . .

8 DECEMBER 2012

Gr crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning.
She was the little runt.
Many tears . . . still can't believe she is gone.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in Grous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . . .

Gr

JACKIE IKE:
So sad!! Many tears!!

Gr

SUE COULSON:
I am soooo sorry to hear that Gr didn't make it. I love the names Merry & Gr. God bless her little soul and keep her safe and happy at the Bridge.

Gr

SUE FORRESTER:
We share your grief that little Gr did not thrive. Of course there will be many eager paws and loving Mommies greeting her at the Bridge to take care of her.

And what a star Charlotte is . . . she looks tired but satisfied that she has done all she could. I wish I could adopt her!

Sue & the Aussie As (we'd like the babies, too, please)

Gr

KIM:
Poor baby. I know that Lynn has her hands full; checking on the little family every two hours is really going the extra mile.

Gr

BOB ANDERSON:
How sad . . . there HAS to be a special place for these li'l Pup Angels!

(Please note that, in keeping with the season, Miss First Born pup is now named Noelle.)

That evening, Lynn writes:

This morning was very sad for me.
It will be therapeutic to write about it and put into the web
my connection with one very special little puppy.

I expected to be awakened every couple of hours or so
by the sounds of puppies squealing . . . much like last night.
For some reason I sat bolt upright in bed,
looked at my watch and realized I had slept over five hours without hearing a peep.
I raced over to the box to count heads and found
little Gr huddled in the corner.
Noelle & Merry were suckling on Charlotte.
I picked up Gr and felt that she was getting cool.
Her mouth looked like it wanted to suckle so I put her on a nipple.
No luck.
I put her in my sweatshirt close to me and woke my husband.
Within five minutes, she crossed the Bridge.

I know now that little Gr was the one that woke me
so that I could hold her close as she went from this world to the next.
I held her close and rocked & bawled . . . & rocked & bawled.
I felt like I had done something wrong.
Still holding her, I went to look at Noelle & Merry.
They didn't look as active as they were yesterday . . .
but were still suckling on Charlotte.

After taking care of feeding & pottying Charlotte,
I went outside in the rain.
I picked out a special spot in my Spirit Garden for my dear little Gr . . .
in my "family" section under a spruce tree . . . and dug her grave.
I held her close and bawled all over again . . .
then laid my dear little Gr to rest.
As soon as I can, I will get a little stone
from our local garden center that says "Gr" and put it by her.
Until then, I took one of my concrete birdbaths with a large leaf imprint,
that I normally turn upside down for the winter,
and placed it lovingly over her.
After I went back into the house, it started to snow.

Gr was the run of the litter; she weighed
about two ounces less than the other girls.
She had trouble suckling from the start.
I had to work at getting her to stay on a nipple
and would cradle her in my hand while she fed.
I know, as many have told me, that it was nature's way
of saying that she was not to make it to be an adult pup . . .
but that didn't seem to make it hurt less.

Trying to get Noelle to suckle on the bottle

I called my vet just as soon
as they opened and
bundled up Charlotte & pups
to see if Charlotte's
milk was good
and to find out if there
were any more problems.
The milk was deemed good,
but it seems the only teats
that expressed milk were
the rather large "udders"
in the rear.
I know the pups took turns
suckling just about every one of them,
but maybe they were not
getting anything from
the front ones.

Noelle getting her share

My vet suggested that I start to bottle feed
so I know how much the pups were getting . . .
then let them suckle on Charlotte as much as they wanted for any additional.
She taught us how to bottle feed and how to tube feed
if the bottle feeding was not working.
My husband was there so he learned how to be my helper
if we ever needed to tube feed.
Both Noelle & Merry had full tummies by the time we left.

Merry feeding

For all of you who sent very comforting words during this very sad day,
I want you to know they were heard and read . . . each one.
Thank you so much for your thoughts & prayers . . .
they have been a tremendous comfort to me.

Burping Merry . . .

Ph

. . . yes. you have to burp them like a human baby

I received this little note from Bogie Sherman:

Brandy arrived at the bridge safely. But we had a tremendous surprise.
Brandy was carrying something in her paws. It was a little baby puppy, Gr!
Wow . . . it's a good thing Brandy took such good care of Gr and helped her make the journey.
She is a real hero. They will both rest a short while, then join us for all the Chanukah festivities
I am going to light the giant Menorah tonight and every night some other doggie will be honored.
Love to Penny Sprague and all.

Michele Morrissey Miller-Day wrote:

I have to say that when I looked at this precious picture of Little Gr,
I noticed that her marking on her chest is in the shape of angel wings.
She must have come here to touch your heart in a very special way to let you know what a wonderful person
you truly are and to keep up the beautiful work you do.

The tears flowed all over again.
The Airedale community is very special . . . .

Gr

SANDE MANCINI:
Oh how sad that sweet little baby girl, Gr has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. They all looked so healthy in the pictures, especially the one of sweet little Gr howling. Little Gr knew all about LOVE, thanks to Lynn. She left this earth knowing what LOVE is. Many do not have that luxury! I will light a candle for your little girl.
With Heartfelt Sympathy

Gr

DOREEN MUNDIE:
I am just sitting her crying and crying about Little Gr. They are so innocent. When I think of how vile humans can be and how pure these little creatures are, I can hardly bear the loss of innocence. Bless Lynn, for all the good care these pups are receiving. Rescues are filled with the best people this nation has. I will be sending prayers to her for her efforts. Bless Charlotte's little family.

Gr

MARE MOORE:
Bless you Lynn, and God-speed to you Wee Gr, she who now awaits the day when you will be reunited once more and she can thank you for showing her the depths of your love freely given during her brief stay on this planet.

Sending gentle hugs and comforting thoughts your way.
