KATIE IS GROOMED

4 JANUARY 2010

What a small girl she is!

Well . . . I know a bit more about this absolutely charming little girl. She has obviously been someone's beloved pet and was used to being in a house and being groomed. She jumped right into the bathtub and stood still while I bathed her. She did wiggle all over when I tried to get the towel on her to dry her. She let me use the blow dryer on her and didn't run terrified.

She was fine with clipping, although my clippers quit part way through and I had to finish with scissors. She didn't like her back end fussed with much, but only showed me so by wiggling and trying to sit down. I used a comb to pull at mats and not once did she even try to nibble at the comb . . . not once! No teeth . . . just plenty of kisses. She was such a gentle soul during grooming.

She is also very handsome (can I say that of a little girl?) She has a dark coat and beautiful whiskers and face. Her tail wags constantly when she stands. She jumped up on the couch when she was done as if to make herself at home.

I had taken her out into our dog yard prior to starting her bath and groom. When we finished, she went to the door as if to say, "I want out." I let her out and she did her business again. I believe she may be housebroken. She could have easily done her business in the house for the three hours or so she was being bathed and groomed and played with, but chose not to.

We had a photo session and afterwards, she walked over to one of the dog beds lying on the floor and went to sleep. Unfortunately, I had to wake her to put her in a crate for the night so I could let my dogs out. She does not seem to like being in the crate much as she barks for quite a while before quieting down to sleep, but she did go into the crate without much trouble.

I let her run around the house a bit and had some time to observe her. She seems to hop mostly on her front legs and especially when she is excited. She can put one foot in front of the other like a normal dog when she walks slowly, but she still has an odd gait when she does.

She has a slight eye infection in her left eye, which is the only thing I have meds for.

Susi Harter sent the following email about a dog similar to Katie:

We had one like that come in many years ago, her name was Emma. I still have the video of her running. She hopped only in the front but it is thought to be a birth defect where the motor function part of the brain did not develop properly before birth. One cause of this I was told could be that the bitch was heavily infested with intestinal parasites while pregnant. Sounds like the same thing. Emma did fine and moved to Chicago with super nice people.

5 January:

Last night I found that if I left Katie loose in the utility room, she was much happier. She really did not like the crate. She slept through the night after that.

In the morning, I let her out and then I fed her. After she finished breakfast, she went right to the door to the dog yard and waited for me to let her out and take care of business . . . after which, she came right back to the door to be let in.

I just dropped Katie off at Camp BowWow for the week. Today she is in indoor playyard 3, which has medium to small dogs in it. She gets along just fine with all the dogs!

Also, I just heard from Beverly Langley. Beverly & I are working on setting up a time to meet on Saturday to see how Katie & Shadow get along. It things go well, Beverly will take her home to foster with the intent to adopt. I can't thank you enough, Beverly, for being interested in this special little girl! Just wait until the first time she kisses your face . . . she has already stolen my heart.
