I've sent an email to a breeder in Spain:

Subject: Airedale in Shelter in Malaga, please can you help?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a member of worldwide Airedale Rescue groups, and I am in Australia.
We are searching for help for a young male Airedale who is in a shelter in Malaga.

I do not speak Spanish so I apologise for using English,
but I see on your website that you are proficient in English . . . thank you.

There are many of us around the world (USA, Canada, UK, Dominican Republic, Australia, New Zealand)
who wish to help this dog find a good, safe and loving home which he so deserves.
It may be that he originated from your kennels, but even if not,
I know we all care very much about Airedales wherever they are.

Although you are some distance from Malaga,
would it be possible for you to contact the email given,
and help to rescue this boy please?

I have attached the information that we have, plus his photographs.

I really hope you can help us,
and look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

Kind regards
Sue Forrester

[I never received a reply from them]

I've also sent an email to Lynda & Paul McCarthy, members of WESWATC
(WEST OF ENGLAND & SOUTH WALES AIREDALE TERRIER CLUB);
Lynda handles rescue.

Paul and Lynda,

There is a desperate young Airedale in Malaga, Spain, urgently needing a safe home.
We have it all over Facebook and the Yahoo lists and his story is going around the world right now.

If you have any contacts in Spain (he is in Malaga), can you please do what you can to help?
We need to get him into a foster home at a minimum, then a safe forever home.
I have attached the notes and his photograph posted today on FB.

He looks so dreadfully sad and neglected, but beneath that mess is a great dog I am sure.

Let me know if you can help at all.
There is a lot of help being offered financially; it is just getting someone closer to initiate some action.
We can find the funds, I am sure. What would it take to get him into UK?

Sue in Oz

Lynda replies:

Hi Sue,

Thanks for emailing me, you could be in LUCK!

Airedale in Malaga . . . my best friend Christine Cole, "Magwyr Airedales" was a breeder/shower here,
went to live in Spain 18 months ago to start a new life with her new husband Peter, taking two Airedales with them.
She doesn't breed or show anymore ,but lives near ALMERIA. . . . not far away from MALAGA.

I will fwd your emails asap, and give her a phone call this morning.

Fingers crossed . . . . Will keep you informed.

Sidney Hardie writes:

Via Sue Forrester, Lynda McCarthy in the UK is in contact with friends in Spain;
we have Spanish speakers in contact with the rescue group trying to help Kenzo.
Keep your paws crossed that we can get him to safety.

He was picked up as a stray.
He is currently in a shelter in a 15-day quarantine, then can be adopted.
It is a kill shelter and they never know when it might happen,
so people are urgently working on getting him to safety.

[Sue gives some background:

[Then on to Facebook with Daniella Slon
(she is in Philadelphia and is a WFT person,
a friend of mine from Enzo days)

[Dani and a few others just a couple of weeks prior had rescued a WFT from Spain.
They named him Thor. So the whole thing was pretty hot off the press
as far as terriers/rescue/Spain was concerned.
She jumped in and offered to help as soon as we got to hear about Kenzo.]

Daniella writes:

Yes, happy to report the wire named Thor is in a wonderful foster home in Galicia (North Spain) -
his health issues are being addressed; when he gains some weight,
he will be neutered. He is a sweetheart.

We also got a smooth out of a shelter and got him adopted to a good Spanish family.

The key is to find someone on the ground in Spain to get him OUT of the shelter
(most places there are high kill) and to safety.
Because of laws about getting dogs to UK -
once safe he might need to be fostered for a while in Spain.
Dogs have to have rabies shots to go to UK and they require a
three-week wait from shot to entry.

There are quite a few Brits living in Spain - if you can find an Dale person,
that would be a huge help. I have not heard back from the email asking
WHERE Kenzo is, is he a kill shelter, etc. Spain is huge
so you need to know where he is to find someone to get him.

Once I figured out where Thor was, I took to Twitter/Facebook
to find a local rescue or dog lover to help. Diana Brusi did most of the work.
If I can help with any social media stuff, let me know and keep me in the loop.
I'd love to see Kenzo rescued.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this Dale is KENZO.
If you and the amazing Dale community could rescue ENZO -
you can save K-ENZO too. Who knows,
maybe the spirit of Enzo led us to Kenzo!

[Read the story of ENZO of Czechoslovakia & Australia HERE.]

Team work again with the Dale people.
I'm working with Sue Forrester in Australia,
Sidney Hardie in USA, Lynda McCarthy & Jackie McGuinness in UK,
Patricia Cruz in Dominican Republic and other Dale people.
Diana Brusi also offering advice. We've spoken to the people who posted Kenzo -
he is in a kill shelter; been there for some time -
we don't know how much time he has -
the report is that they can kill a dog when they feel like it.
We have good contacts and are praying to get to him very soon.

Patricia Cruz is offering to help with any translation you need,
and she knows someone in Malaga who might be able to help.

[It is at this point that emails
& FaceBook messages
are furiously traveling
over the internet among
members of the
worldwide Airedale Community . . .
too many to recount here.

[Suffice it to say, Kenzo
was adopted . . .
the rest of his story follows.]

Yaiza, who runs a Pug Rescue Group
and has had Airedales
previously, adopted Kenzo.
Here they are on the day
she picked him up from the shelter.
(note that he is leaning against the wall)

They're both smiling!

On 25 May, Yaiza writes:

We went to the vet;
Kenzo has issues on the back legs.
Seems he lived all his life locked
in a tiny space,
as he has no muscle tone.
We're doing some xrays
to confirm it is not hip dysplasia.
Although it seems it is not,
but I want to do them to confirm or deny.

As we do the test,
we will be updating you
on Kenzo's results.

For now he is doing very well, althought he doesn't know how
to play with me, and he doesn't know what to do when I am petting him.
I hope he will be used to receive love soon. Seems he never had a family to love him,
which is so sad . . . and makes me so angry when people don't love their dogs!
For me, they are like everyday's air!
Thank you people for being such good human beings. Thank you.
