Pennies sit in jars around the country, waiting in desuetude until their owners work up the energy to haul them to a bank or to a supermarket with a Coinstar kiosk where they can be exchanged for useful money.

WITH PENNIES TO SPAIRE!

The month of November was set aside as
PENNIES 4 AIREDALES Month.

Rumor has it that the penny may shortly be going the way of the dodo bird. Pennies, which apparently cost more to mint than their face value, will possibly be withdrawn from circulation in Canada. We understand the same discussion is taking place in the United States.

With this in mind, we gave you a final opportunity to make a difference with those pennies that were weighting down your purse and causing your trousers to plummet.

You ounted up your pennies and any other spare change you had handy, turned the coin into paper at your neighborhood bank and sent us a cheque or PayPal payment for the amount.

In turn, we sent you a small gift in gratitude for your donation AND we entered you in the drawing for a random prize in addition to the gift.

You were also eligible for the grand prize which wwas awarded to the individual or family who donated the most change.

As an additional incentive, there was a prize, chosen by a panel, for the most interesting and unusual penny container.

Your pennies helped dogs such as blind Serendipity in Ontario who may need $3000 worth of eye surgery; Anderson & Taylor in British Columbia, as well as PENNIES 4 AIREDALES Spokesdog Sarge, whose Rescue story is HERE . . . all of whom have required recent surgery for malignancies.

The Starfish Stories an 8.5" x 11" booklet with light board covers and a plastic coil binding. There are two original drawings included, one on the cover, as well as a page of colored photographs of Murphy. The entire booklet is 28 pages, and includes 45 anecdotes featuring Murphy and his pals, Angie Adorable and Pifflesqueak the Toy Poodle, plus two essays Maureen wrote about Murphy -- one at the beginning and another at the end of the work.

MURPHY, OUR STARFISH

The Starfish
Once upon a time there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean to do his writing.
He had a habit of walking on the beach
before he began his work.
One day he was walking along the shore.
As he looked down the beach,
he saw a human figure
moving like a dancer.
He smiled to himself to think of someone
who would dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer,
he saw that it was a young man
and the young man wasn't dancing,
but instead he was reaching down to the shore,
picking up something
and very gently throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out,
"Good morning! What are you doing?"

The young man paused,
looked up and replied,
"Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked,
why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out.
And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize
that there are miles and miles of beach
and starfish all along it.
You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely.
Then he bent down,
picked up another starfish
and threw it into the sea,
past the breaking waves and said,
"It made a difference for that one."
