SAMMIE VISITS THE VET

6-10 FEBRUARY 2012

Monday, 6 February: Gayle Kiesow writes:

The report from the vet on Monday was upsetting,
to say the least, but after running blood work
and a follow-up call this morning,

As far as the liver issues and blood work:
It came out remarkably well for what
they are now guessing is a ten-year-old Cairn.
She is frail, like an old woman, from being malnourished.

But her jaw is fractured, as is a molar that is being extracted,
hopefully today. We're not sure yet
if her jaw will have to be wired.
She also has several broken/cracked teeth
in the front of her mouth;
the vet is guessing she was hit by a car.
Such a tiny girl at ten pounds;
we're wondering if the jaw is not from abuse.
Hard to say, since she came in as a stray.

No confirmation yet as to being blind in one eye;
will work on the dry eye issues as well.

So as we move forward with Sammie,
positive thoughts & prayers are appreciated.

Tuesday, 7 February:

Sammie did have surgery today;
the broken molar was extracted.
Because her jaw is "so loose,"
she will have surgery again Wednesday to wire her jaw.
She is being kept at the vet for monitoring.

Let's hope she continues to do well.

Wednesday, 8 February:

Sammie came through the second surgery fine;
very much "out of it"
and they will keep her that way
be sure she gets the rest she needs.
The vet stated, "She is a tough little girl;
I'm proud of her and how she is doing."

Today they wired the broken jaw;
the vet doing the surgery actually
had to drill a hole in her jaw to place the wires.
Since the front teeth "stabilize the jaw,"
nothing will be done at this time to fix the broken teeth.
More surgery down the line.

She will rest there tomorrow;
Mary Whitledge & I will get her
Friday morning to bring her to my house
to recoup and grow into a happy CairnGirl.
Hillcrest Vet Clinic in Rockford, Illinois
is giving her excellent care;
we are glad to have them on board
to help this little gal.

She is currently on one medication for the dry eye
and will be starting another before she comes home Friday.
She will also receive all vaccinations, be wormed and given Capstar,
although there is no sign of fleas now as they
"jump ship" during surgery.
Sounds like Sammie is going to have a bit of a long recovery.
