SAMMIE IS
ON THE ROAD AGAIN

10 FEBRUARY 2012

Mary Whitledge (and her little dog, Dulci, too) & I
traveled to Rockford, Illinois to pick up Sammie,
a 2.5-hour trip, one way.

. . . at Hillcrest Vet Clinic in Rockford, Illinois

Hillcrest Animal Hospital has had Sammie since
the beginning of the week when it was determined
that her jaw was fractured. Dr. Kari Kobus was our treating vet;
Dr. Wimmer was the ortho surgeon who did the jaw rewiring.

Very busy clinic;
open a lot of hours through the week and walk-in appointments only.
We waited in line, approximately five-patient-deep,
to get to the counter and then another hour to see Dr Kobus.
We were both kind of nervous,
not sure what we were going to be seeing
when they brought in Sammie.

Ph

What a doll baby she is!
Looks a little rough with her shaved jaw line,
dirty hair, and obviously medicated,
but totally friendly with a wag or two of her tail.
She just wants to be held & loved.

Ph

Thank goodness Mary drove home so Sammie & I
could hang out in the back seat.
Sammie was more than comfortable in her warm bed;
she slept most of the way home.

Bless Mary's heart for hanging out with me after we got home.
Welcoming us was our four - and we all know the confusion of that -
and then we had stuff to carry in.
Sammie had not eaten or been out and needed to be given
all five meds she came home with.
Whew! Can you say "worn out"?
Needless to say everyone rested the evening away.

Saturday morning:

It took over 35 minutes to give her the meds;
how can you get a dog with a wired jaw to take bitter pills?
Bob remembered that cat food masks the bitter taste of pills.
So broken into fourths and hidden in cat food,
fed by hand, we got the job done.
What a mess, but she was so patient.
Through talking to the vet office here that will continue her treatment,
I was able to contact a local pharmacy that compounded
her two tablet meds into liquid & gel form that you actually rub on her ear.
Fabulous; now I can be sure she is getting what she needs.

Ph

The swelling is going down and she is up & about,
goes outside well, eats well, can't find fault with her at all.
She slept all night in a very cushy dog bed,
not a sound out of her, woke up with dry panties.
She barks to come back in!
She is turning out to be a good house guest.

You can tell she was someone's pet:
Sits on the back of the couch;
sits & stays for her food dish and to beg for a treat;
wants to ride in your left arm while I am driving.
Wonder if someone in southern Indiana is missing her.
If so, they should have had a collar & tag on her,
microchipped AND spayed her.

Ph

When Bob got home last night about 8:30,
she was really wagging her tail; likes men for sure.
He baby-talked her; she approached him
and sat up on her back legs, staying like that
until he picked her up.

Now off to the vet with a formed stool
and to buy a tiny sweater for her.

Ph

This is a GREAT, well-mannered little girl,
seriously going to make someone a great pet.
Fenced yard, home most of the day and no small kids,
of course, and she is on her way.
Anyone looking for a loving lap dog, come see Sammie!

DOREEN MUNDIE:
Can you imagine what it means to little ones like Sammie . . . to be in the warmth of a loving home, with good food, kind words, and all that attention? Especially after being out in the cold, hurt, half blind, and not knowing what to do for food and shelter . . . bless those who rescue! Especially older & injured little ones!! Thanks for all YOU do!
