MAPS ON PLANES
(CERTAINLY BETTER THAN
SNAKES ON PLANES!)
16-17 MAY 2016

17 MAY, 6:17 p.m.

These were taken yesterday and last night.

Total miles traveled yesterday: 7587. We flew a great circle route as photos will show.

They are a little blurry because a flash wiped out the screen,
and hand-holding had a slow shutter speed.

I took a few of the route (Great Circle Polar Route).
We flew UP Lake Michigan along Wisconsin's thumb
and then turned and headed west over Hudson's Bay,
Western Canada (HI, Maureen!) and then across into Russia
and down the length of China.

Here is the baggage carrousel in Shanghai . . .

. . . and the "transfer" area where you go when you
don't have a VISA because you don't plan to stay
and GETTING ONE takes an in-person trip
to the Chinese Embassy in Chicago
(no appointments allowed) and you need birth certificates
and all sorts of other paperwork
I couldn't acquire in the short time after I found out
I had to leave a day earlier than planned and stay overnight.

I have to shower and go down for breakfast soon.
Then I can walk around the hotel and take some photos from the street,
as I can't see anything from my building.

8:19 p.m. (Florida time): Continental breakfast Chinese style

INDONESIA

No utensils, just chopsticks; no coffee or hot tea.
I played safe with the fried rice and a couple of dumplings
and what looked like some egg rolls or wonton and a cookie.

The room was clean; the water was hot;
the toilet flushed; the pillows were soft;
the bed was firm. This is not a new hotel,
but it was satisfactory. This is the front entrance.

Views of the restaurant

You can see where they had the steam table set up . . .

That's quite a trip! Looking forward to the next installment.......

BOB ANDERSON:
Neal's journey so far is quite the adventure. I love the photos of the transport part of the trip almost as much as the dive photos.

ALBERT BUYS:
Wow ... Remember I was born in Indonesia (Dutch East Indies). I have been in Bali many times after Independence is now a tourist trap. The Dutch flag is red, white, blue and indonesia took the Red and White.

Is Neal auditioning for the amazing race reality show, as they always stop in Bali?

Anim

MARY BRABENDER:
The story and pictures are terrific. Our world expands as Neal continues on his travels. Lots of adventures. I told him he should publish a travel diary one of these years. You have all the beginnings of a book here in your series of trips/pictures...
