NOW PLAYING: STAR TREK, FIRST CONTACT

Raizel was apparently taken from a hoarder and put into a shelter in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was fostered by Anne Gregory for a few days before she came to us.

The

Raizel

The vet who checked her out for Anne estimated her age to be between 8-10 years old. She was spayed on 1 June 2007, so it's likely she's had lots of litters. She is deaf, has cataracts, a mammary tumor, very few teeth (that will have to be removed because they are rotten), bacterial infections in both ears, and severe skin problems. She literally smelled liked she was rotting when I picked her up. She's on prednisone, ketoconazole & cephalexin.

Here's what Raizel's current situation is:

1.  Finish this round of prednisone for her skin.

The

2.  Finish this second round of cephalexin for her skin.

The

3.  Get blood work done to make sure this isn't Cushings because this skin problem is all over her back and the backs of her back legs/bottom.

4.  Get a massive mammary tumour removed and a dental to pull several teeth; they already have exposed roots and they HAVE to be taken out of her mouth.

The

5.  Bathe her twice a week with the special shampoo that the vet prescribed and I bought yesterday for her.

6.  After her bath, put the creme rinse on her like a leave-in conditioner. This will soothe her somewhat.

7. Continue to give her Benedryl™ as needed to provide relief of her CONSTANT gnawing, poor girl!

The

8.  Give her medication that was prescribed yesterday for the yeast on her body.

9.  Flush her ears twice a day with special stuff that was given. This will get rid of the cauliflower in her ears and open up her ear canals. They are so dirty & gross that things will get better, surely.

As you can see, much work needs to be done, but Iım telling you that she is worth it and is totally putting out the sweetest energy. She wants to get better and is a completely willing patient. She is going to be a bundle of love for someone - we just have to give her every resource to help her get to that point!

The

Bob & Raizel

Despite all of it, though, she is the the happiest dog! She follows us around and never lets us out of her sight. She loves affection and wants to be nothing but a lap dog. She started playing with the other dogs today for the first time and has actually been enticing them! I think she's starting to feel better and is becoming energetic. Her lack of hearing & good eyesight isn't slowing her down at all! I honestly didn't think she'd make it because her quality of life seemed so pitiful, but she is improving and coming out of her shell very rapidly!
