ABBOTT UPDATES

2 FEBRUARY-2 MARCH 2016

Ph Ph

On 2 February,
Heather writes:

Abbott had his staples removed today
and had another laser treatment.
He is healing well and fully
using his leg with only a minor limp.
He is enjoying his 15-minute walks
three times per day and snuggles with his boy.
Life is good.

Still has to wear the cervical collar
most of the time
so he doesn't lick his incision.
It is very itchy with the hair growing back.
Doing well with walks and stretches
and getting stronger by the day.

8 FEBRUARY:

The vet is extremely happy with the healing process
in Abbott's knee. He is bearing weight and using his leg
liaske they would expect to see six weeks post-surgery,
and he is only three weeks post-surgery!

9 FEBRUARY:

Took Abbott for his sixth laser treatment yesterday.
He did well as always and was walking around the waiting room
prior to his treatment while the vet watched him.
They said they expect that dogs six-eight weeks out from surgery
would be walking the way his is now.
They are VERY pleased with his recovery progress
and say we couldn't ask for any better result.

He is now officially off of his Novox (pain medication).
I have been weaning him down for the last week.

They said as far as post-surgical laser treatment he is done,
but if we want to continue with laser treatment for
the sore and achy joint they recommend once per week.
but it is up to us. I am thinking I should just watch to see if
he starts becoming stiff or painful and make a decision based on that.

All in all, Abbott is doing wonderfully,
enjoying his longer walks and is wanting to play already.
Obviously we have a way to go before he is allowed to run and jump
and I will continue to keep him calm and resting as much as possible,
but he is in very good spirits.

14 FEBRUARY:

Happy Valentine's Day!
Abbott is roaming the house and playing with toys today.
He is walking well and gaining muscle.
Next week starts puppy pushups to build muscle for stability.

17 FEBRUARY:

Abbott went to the groomer today and had his first bath, blow dry,
sanitary trim, and nail clippering since his ACL repair surgery.
In true Abbott style he danced the whole time he was on the table and
just wanted to get down to visit all the people & dogs in the office.
He is such a sweet guy. No knee surgery can slow him down.

He even posed for a fluffy Dale picture . . .

He also played a game of fetch with Dre in the house.
He is a happy guy and is gaining muscle back in his leg every day.
He has been completely off pain meds for about a week and a half now.
We are trying him without the cervical collar to see if he still messes
with his incision now that the really itchy hair growth is done.
He seems to be doing well.

18 FEBRUARY:

Dre tore his ACL on 5 February and has to have surgery.
He will need his buddy Abbott to snuggle him back to health.
Abbott is great at this.

Abbott is doing extremely well in his recovery from his ACL surgery.
He only limps if he has overdone things (playing/running);
when he wants to run fast, he just picks up that leg.
The vet is very pleased with his recovery.
They told me that there was another dog who had had the same surgery
on the same day who did not do the cold laser therapy;
that dog is a full three weeks behind in its recovery, compared to Abbott.

Abbott is running & playing (supervised to minimize chance of re-injury)
and is happy to be allowed up on the furniture again.

He has enjoyed games of fetch both in the house and yard,
and even chased some snowballs after the big snow this past week . . .

His hair is growing in nicely, but I fear he will not have
his full Airedale leg fringe until early fall although he
doesn't seem to mind a bit.
Once the weather becomes more stable and warm,
I will get him his summer Airecut and his short leg hair shouldn't be so noticeable.

I have scheduled his dental with extraction for Wednesday, 2 March, 8 a.m.
He will not need blood work prior as he recently had it done
for his surgery and it all came back good.
They are still giving us the discount for Dental Health Month
since I scheduled it before the end of February.

Abbott is a sweet boy who patiently walks behind my son on his crutches
(Dre's, not Abbott's), chats with me when I cook
(and loves freshly-sliced carrots), will snuggle with anyone
who sits on the couch, and seeks me out and barks at me
until I give him pats and kisses anytime I enter a room with him,
regardless if I have only been gone 30 seconds.

He is a joyful guy who seems to be an eternal puppy at heart.
It makes me happy to see him running and playing pain-free.
He is completely off all pain medications and the only supplement
he is on now is the Synovi G4 for overall joint health.
I am looking forward to Wednesday and getting his dental issues
taken care of so he will be all fixed up and good to go for years to come.

2 MARCH:

Ph

Abbott did excellent during his dental procedure today.
He is resting comfortably at home now and has eaten.
they said they only had to take out one bad tooth, cleaned his teeth,
and noted a couple pockets in his gums for future reference
to keep an eye on. Otherwise he is all good to go.

He is still not allowed to jump into the van or anything
as he is still healing from his surgery.
The vet is very pleased with his recovery, use of the leg, and range of motion.
