HERSCHEL IN NEW MEXICO 22 FEBRUARY 2012
Herschel is a 10-month-old Airedale puppy, already a very big boy at 78 pounds. He loved to run, play, fetch, play bitey-face, go for long walks . . . all those activities that every young Airedale loves.	A BIGNOSEPOKE from Herschel
	Unfortunately, he had an accident in December, when he was playing in the snow and fell on ice, doing the "Bambi" splay thing just like in the movies!! Youch!!
The first vet though Herschel had pulled some muscles and just needed to be kept quiet so the soft tissue injury would heal. The medications didn't help, however, so the specialist vet, Dr. McKee, took several x-rays.
	Dr. McKee determined that Herschel was born with really, really bad hips; when he slipped and fell, "everything went to hell in a hand basket."
	Two surgeries will be required, one on each hip. Until then, he can't even walk and it hurts a lot. Dr. McKee thinks Herschel should have a long normal life after the surgeries, although he is probably not going to be up for 10-mile hikes.

Herschel is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all shots. He is still in New Mexico, but a foster home is ready for him in Arizona after the first surgery, scheduled for 2 March. The clinic has ordered the special plates that will be installed in his pelvis. They expect to have them by 2 March, but if not, they will delay the surgery.
For now, poor (not-so-little) Herschel spends his day on the couch or in bed, staggers out (with help) to pee/poop and then back to bed. He has to be kept as quiet as possible until the surgery.

Sidney Hardie writes: Herschel is still in the care of his former owner, Sherry Scara, and will continue there until he gets through the surgery and is able to walk. It is not in Herschel's best interest due to his condition to move him at this time.
Whatever any of us might think of breeders in general or Sherry's breeding program in particular, there is no doubt in my mind that Sherry loves her Airedales and is the best person at the moment to give Herschel the care he is going to need to recover. Sherry has signed a release making me Herschel's legal owner and a foster agreement. I want to reassure you that Herschel has been neutered since the age of six months, well before this accident. It was always Sherry's intent that he go to a loving family as a pet. I have not yet received the list of donors from the vet clinic, but I will be contacting each person who has made a donation and will refund your money if that is your wish.
