BUSTER
IN MARYLAND

AUGUST 2010

Daren Beltz writes:

Leo (f/k/a Buster)
came into CRUSA with
his breeding mate
Nala (f/k/a Itsy)
in August 2010.
Their new lives
have been a big change
and a challenge for them.

Itsy & Buster on Intake Day

As a new foster home, this was our first time
seeing & fostering puppy mill Cairns.
Our hearts just cry for them, but at the same time,
are overjoyed when new fears are overcome and
they get closer to being the Cairns that they should have been.
Simple joys like Leo walking around the house with a stuffed toy in his mouth,
Nala exploring the house (until you look at her and she runs
back to the safety of her spot in the living room).
Their barking at the TV & the mirrors are long gone,
but new challenges present themselves every day.

Buster

Leo & Nala today

Due to his previous puppy mill life, Leo has dental issues.
This past week, Leo fell ill and had to see the vet.
Leo was not eating, was vomiting and becoming dehydrated.
He has a stomach virus and is not eating in part due
to needing more dental work done:
a standard cleaning and four infected teeth need to be removed.
He is on a bland soft food diet and his appetite is improving by the day.

BUSTER CROSSES
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

12 FEBRUARY 2013

Daren writes:

It is with great sadness I tell you that our CRUSA foster Cairn,
Buster Leo, has passed on to Rainbow Bridge.

Nine-year-old Leo came in to CRUSA with his breeding mate,
Nala, back in 2010 from a puppy mill.

Leo did get his forever home, but was returned to foster care
six months ago due to his regressing to acting like he was in a puppy mill.
Leo was improving with his walking;
he enjoyed walking around the house with a stuffed toy in his mouth.
He had learned that human touch was a good thing and
would come to you and tap you with his paw
or sit up on his rear to get attention.

Many tears have been shed for Leo and he is sorely missed by all.
I know that he is looking down on us and thanking CRUSA
for the time he got to spend just being a Cairn
and feeling the loving touch of a family.

The day had been normal as it can be in a foster home.
Leo acted normal all day and even ate all his breakfast & dinner.
Late last night he began having seizures and
was lethargic after coming out of them.
His gums & tongue were pale and he was laboring in his breathing,
so we rushed him to the emergency vet.
Leo stopped breathing a few times and they brought him back
while the doctor tried to figure out what was going on.
But in the end he stopped breathing and they could not bring him back.
The doctor believes that being it was so sudden,
Leo had a blood clot that went to his heart or brain.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . . .
