DUNCAN NEEDS OUR HELP AGAIN 28 AUGUST 2013
Deb Hodgens writes: The shelter staff had said Duncan was about 13 years old, but my vets think he is older. Duncan is blind and deaf. We call him The Little Prince, because he has to have his special bed just right; the water bowl has to have fresh water and be full; and he likes to be carried everywhere.
The other dogs pick on him, so we keep him separated. He loves to sit on the couch with someone, or in my office chair with me. His greatest passion now is eating. The cataract in his left eye luxated and he needs to see an eye doctor. Duncan has a heart murmur, so the eye will be managed by medicine.
The initial visit to the eye doctor will be about $130, which is a discount for foster dogs. His medicines are what they give to humans; I can obtain them for a 40% discount at Sam's. One will cost $40; the other $22, unless the eye doctor prescribes something else. At this point in Duncan's life, I just want to keep him comfortable.
On 4 September, Deb writes: Duncan went to the ophthalmologist on 30 August. Both eyes are luxated, but the cataract in the right eye has moved. The intraocular pressure in both eyes is within the normal range. The limited view in the left eye revealed an anteriorly-displaced iris. There is also bleeding in the left eye. In order to obtain a more accurate diagnosis, an ultrasound of the eye would have to be done. However, the course of treatment would not be changed./STRONG> Duncan's overall health prevents surgery, so he is being given eye drops in both eyes twice daily. His blood pressure was normal; blood was taken to see to his overall health. Other than the spot where the blood was taken, he seems to be comfortable and his eyes are not oozing any discharge. Thanks to everyone who is helping. The eye medicines are the same as for us and are expensive.
