We were at the vet Monday to remove the bandage; they said it was healing really well and are very pleased with her progress. They gave me some stuff to soak her foot in at night.
	The vet's office called yesterday; the other lab tests came back and she has a staph infection. They prescribed a different antibiotic; I can start reducing the pain meds. Friday we go back to meet with the doctor and get the stitches out.

On 19 September, Lynn writes: I received a voice mail today from Stella's vet. The biopsy took quite a while, but the diagnosis is that she has Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy. SLO is thought to be an autoimmune disease that targets the toe nails. The hallmark of autoimmune diseases is that the body mistakenly forms antibodies against part of itself. If it's antibodies against our red blood cells, then we destroy our own blood and become anemic. If it's antibodies against our joints, we become arthritic. In the case of symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy, dogs form antibodies against their toe nails and reject them. He said the treatment will consist of antibiotics, niacinamide and a high dose of fatty acids. He also said that this is a disease that we will need to manage . . . it cannot be cured. Since I didnŐt get to talk with him personally, I will have more info tomorrow. So far, Stella has had only one of the two surgeries she needs.
